A British brand for the small mechanical world.
Named for an engineer the world overlooked, then quietly proved right.
James Atkinson was a Victorian engineer working in Hampstead in the late 1800s, at a time when the new science of the internal combustion engine was being settled by patents, court cases and a great deal of arguing in the engineering press. The dominant design, by then, belonged to Nicolaus Otto. Atkinson didn't think it was good enough.
In 1882 he patented a cycle of his own. It had four strokes, like Otto's, but rearranged so the expansion stroke could be made longer than the intake stroke. The thermodynamic upshot was simple: more of the fuel's energy went into useful work, and less was thrown out of the exhaust as heat. The engine was more efficient. It was also more complicated to build, harder to manufacture at scale, and had less peak power. So the world picked Otto.
And there the Atkinson cycle sat, more or less, for the next hundred years. A footnote in engineering textbooks. A historical curio.
Then in 1997, Toyota launched the Prius. A hybrid doesn't need much peak power from its petrol engine, because the electric motor covers that. What it needs is efficiency. So Toyota went back to the design the world had written off as impractical in 1882. It suited the job exactly, and it still does. Every Toyota hybrid since has run on a version of the Atkinson cycle, and so do most of the other hybrids on the road.
We didn't name the brand after James Atkinson because he made oil. He didn't. We named it after him because of how he worked: patiently, deliberately, choosing the right answer for a specific problem rather than the convenient answer for a general one. A century later, the engineering world quietly came around.
What the brand is for
The lubricants industry has drifted towards generalist products. One can that claims to free a zip, ease a hinge, quiet a bearing and protect a boot, and rarely does any of it well.
Atkinson Oil Co. exists for the other approach. A specific oil for a sewing machine. A specific grease for a fishing reel. A specific compound for a stuck thread. Each one formulated for the thing it's actually used on, by people who know the difference between a bobbin race and a bearing race.
